Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), the vanguard organization of Bangladesh power sector has been relentlessly serving the nation for last 50 years. At present, we have achieved to bring 100% people under electricity coverage and have reached per capita generation of 560 kWh (including captive and renewable energy).

Electricity is a vital element for enhancing economic growth, poverty alleviation and social development. Considering this enormous importance of power, government adopted short-term, medium-term, and long-term plan for power generation of which short term plan has already been successfully implemented. Now we are establishing mid term plan with special focus to materialize long term plan. Along with all that, we are working on preparing an Integrated Energy and Power System Master Plan with special focus on zero or lower carbon emission.

Government has made the most strategic and timely changes in the power generation planning in terms of fuel diversity. To elaborate, diverse fuel options like liquid fuel, imported and indigenous coal, renewable energy, LNG and nuclear power have been explored in power generation planning after considering existing gas supply shortage, uncertainty of gas supply in future and analyzing primary fuel supply scenarios for future power generation. Efforts are now under way to reduce dependence on natural gas for the sake of energy security.

In line with enhanced regional cooperation, initiative has been taken to exchange power from neighboring countries. After completion of grid interconnection projects, 1160 MW power is now flowing from India to Bangladesh in two different points. Moreover, efforts are also undergoing to explore options of importing power from neighboring Myanmar, Nepal and Bhutan. As a matter of fact, process of importing 500 MW power from Nepal has been finalized.

Government has also taken measures to increase share of power generation from renewable sources. Alongside three wind power plants, BPDB is providing solar based power to many consumers of remote areas. BPDB has also implemented Grid tied Solar Power Projects at some places of the country. Many other projects are also under different stages of implementation.

As a part of smooth revenue collection more than one third consumers of BPDB have already been brought under prepaid metering system. Rest will be covered by 2024 to ensure a hassle-free distribution sector.

Now ICT has become one of the main ingredients of all development activities. At BPDB, we are continuously working to implement and upgrade advanced digital technology in all arenas to provide its services significantly better.

Transformation of technology is considered as an ever-changing phenomenon in technological advancement process. BPDB is adopting latest proven technology in the field of both generation and distribution which maximizes efficiency while minimizing environmental impact.

Like before, being the mother organization, BPDB will maintain excellent working relation and seamless co-operation with other power sector entities to create a healthy and vibrant power sector in the country.

Finally, consumer satisfaction is the ultimate goal of BPDB. So, we are committed to provide reliable and quality electricity to the consumers and are working smartly and consistently with the aim to transform BPDB into a world class organization.

Bangladesh has already become a developing country. Government has set a target to become an upper-middle income country by 2031 and a developed country by 2041. To fulfill this dream, there needs to be significant support from the power sector where BPDB promises to lead with all its effort.
